Black Dahlia

Black Dahlia is an experimental UK-born and Australian based musician and artist who creates a captivating quirkiness that casts a colourful shadow in the experimental music scene. With performances often compared to artists such as Klaus Nomi and Peter Gabriel, Black Dahlia’s music explores styles such as Art-Pop, New Wave, and the avant-garde. It forges its own unique sound but at the same time takes cues from 80’s absurdities and weirdness such as works by David Bowie, Laurie Anderson, Geneva Jacuzzi, and Tears for Fears.

In 2021, Black Dahlia has collaborated with artists such as Brixx, Randolph & Mortimer, and also featured on the “wonderfully explosive” (Guardian Australia) track by Rebel Yell ‘TNT’. She was also a co-composer for the soundtrack accompanying the short film by Sebastian Vaccaris ‘Let The Blind Lead Those Who Cannot See’ which featured on MUBI and was screened at various film festivals across USA, Australia, and South America. Along with multiple international releases, Black Dahlia has performed live across the EU and Australia alongside artists such as John Maus, Kris Baha, MVTANT, Zanias, Buzz Kull, Lucy Cliche, Cong Josie, Enola, and Rebel Yell. She also performed at acclaimed Tasmanian music festival, Dark Mofo, alongside artists such as Kim Gordon, Nils Frahm, Spiritualized, and Chelsea Wolfe.

In April 2024, ‘Bodyguard’ officially debuted the artist’s theatrical direction in music with a groundbreaking introduction. It was presented with an ABC Rage’s ‘Wild One’ award, received a premiere via Post-Punk.com, and was later featured at SXSW Sydney 2024 Screen Festival. As well as being the Director for the music video, Black Dahlia was also Producer, Art Director, Choreographer, and Concept creator for the project. Donning various characters alongside actors Cong Josie and Bura Bura, Black Dahlia embodies performance art and its mediums such as contortion, mime, surrealism, Dada, the avant-garde, and body horror. The latest song ‘Pulcinella Pegasi’ by Black Dahlia is another etching and dream from one of her many worlds. The song tells the tale of a commedia dell’arte character, Pulcinella Pegasi, in an 18th century world exploring the language of the clouds and the relationship between humans and the skies. The concept of the artwork for the single was created by Black Dahlia and was illustrated by long time collaborator and artist Colin J Thompson, who also illustrated her recently released single “Bodyguard”. The whimsical Pulcinella Pegasi artwork pays homage to 18th and 19th Century art including the styles of Baroque, Rococo & Neoclassicism. Black Dahlia is also in the band Flam Organza.
